Community Projects
The AACPA Service-Learning program uses the five core components of successful service projects:
- Investigation: Identifying community issues and needs that students care about and can potentially address.
- Planning/Preparation: Reaching out to community stakeholders to determining how students can meet needs.
- Action: Engage in the “heart” of the project, i.e., pursing meaningful service-learning experiences.
- Reflection: Encouraging students to think about service, its value and connection to them and to society.
- Demonstration/Celebration: Sharing with teachers, parents, and others what students did and learned.
Four-Service Learning Days have been created to help students annually complete 20 hours of service. On these days, students spend five hours engaged in substantive projects. Activities include visiting senior centers, feeding the homeless, mentoring and addressing issues ranging from poverty to the environment. Students have assisted Catholic Charities, Springs Preserve, Three Square Food Bank, Doolittle Senior Center, Friends of Red Rock, Variety Early Learning Center, Lied Memorial Boys & Girls Club, Nellis Air Force Base, Shade Tree Shelter, Lutheran Social Services, Opportunity Village and Kit Carson Elementary School.
